First Book New Hanover County is now organizing our first public fund raising project. Children from the Community Boys & Girls Club who have received books from us in the past are doing art work which they are donating to be auctioned or sold. Children's Museum of Wilmington has agreed to allow First Book free display space for the art work for the weekend of Feb 5-7, 2010. Food, supplies and facility rental are being covered by earmarked contributions or in-kind funding.
For the Kick-off Coffee & Dessert at the Museum Friday evening Feb. 5 we will need volunteers:
• 4 drivers for a few hours each on Thursday Feb.4 or Friday to collect donated desserts and get them refrigerated at the Museum.
• 3 set-up and clean-up helpers.
• 4-8 “guides” to work 2-4-hr shifts for Saturday to accompany prospective art buyers who don’t happen to have brought children along for Children’s Museum activities.
• 3-6 “guides” for Sunday as above.
• 3-4 “welcome table” helpers to learn about and share info about First Book, encourage & collect donations, and record sales info.

First Book is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Advisory Boards raise funds locally and select programs in their community as First Book grantees. Our local volunteer Advisory Board has been active in since July 2006 and has raised over $8500 and distributed more than 3000 books so far. We have worked with local programs such as Community Boys & Girls Club, several Title One Schools and the Literacy Council to reach children in need in New Hanover County and provide them with free books and educational materials. We want to do more. Every $2 we collect becomes a book for a local child who needs books in the home to build reading skills and foster a love of reading and greater school success.
