Possible Moving to Wilmington...some questions??

Hi Ladies,

My husband and I are in the process of accepting a job at PPDi. I'm really nervous about movnig somewhere we dont know anyone. So I had a few questions. Which areas are good areas to look into for renting a house? We have a 2.5 year old daughter, so schools are important to us. Are there activities for her to do down there? Right now she does gymnastics and dance class each once a week. I belong to a mom's group up here in IL that we go to Bounces houses and playgroups with.

Have any of you moved from another state to NC without knowing anyone? Any advice for someone facing the same situation? I'm very nervous as i'm 15 minutes from family right now and depend on them alot to watch my daughter for doctors appointments or date nights and stuff like that.

I moved here many years ago, from Albuquerque, NM without knowing anyone, so I know exactly how you are feeling. I have friends that work at PPD, and so I know there are a lot of moms that work there, and they seem to be very friendly. Also, I have found moms at the local parks to be very friendly, they just start chatting, and poof, new mom friend. If you haven't already found a house, the Forrest Hills school district is great. There is a great neighborhood in that district called Carolina place (I used to live there) and there is a very strong group of moms that live there, they have playdates, park time, etc. Good luck, and if you would like you can always give me a ring. My work phone is 431-1867 and my name is Rachel

Hello! I am from NC, but moved here this past Sept. It was kind of on a whim...my husband went to work at a security job in Kuwait & my brother had moved here this past Sept. I lived 3 blocks from my mom & stepfather, so that was nice! Family back there is about 1 1/2 hours, so not too bad!
I lived in Fayetteville, NC, originally from there, so it's home regardless! But....I love it here! I know come summer w/all the tourist traffice will get bad...but that's where we use our shortcuts. It's such a diverse town & laid back. There is quite a bit to do here w/children especially, that's one thing I really liked! I have an 19 mo. old son & a daughter who will be 4 next week. We found a house in Castle Hayne, which is just on the outskirt of Wilmington, basically a part of it almost. I like this area, not a lot of traffic, out of the city area, but close enough to everything. The beach is always open (I love the East Coast compared to any beaches I've been to!), I've seen lots of dance studios/.gymnastics (want to check out dance for her eventually), play places where you can take children to play (we didn't have these in Fay.) esp. if it's a rainy or cold day & they get to play on new indoor equip./toys etc..they can color, have a snack & the prices are reasonable ($4-$7)it's a neat idea though. There is a lot of history here & I am ready to really get into learning more about it!
As for living where you don't know anybody, I was married previously, he was in the Army & we moved 3 times, I always met people, but made me really independent & self reliable!! It is harder w/the kids doing some things. I don't ask my brother for help, Iguess I just don't want to bother anybody!?? Iknow it wouldn't, but I just don't as I should!
There are playgroups down here, you can go to meetup.com to check some out. We recently joined one around Christmas & will finally be able to go to a meetup next Friday, making valentines. I want my daughter & son to have some kids to play with!! We live in a neighborhood, but the time of year we moved in our house (Nov.) kids aren't out playing as much. Of course we've had a mild winter, love it!!! I would be more than happy to meet you when you do decide to move here (if you have!? i see this is a Dec. post) & offer any help I could. My name is Lynn Krebs. I have a home based biz you can check out...http://www.storkgreetings.org It has been on the backburner some, but it's starting to come around now that I have a "little" more free time! Please feel free to email me w/any questions, you need anything sent to you etc..really, I don't mind! My email is: lynn_krebs@yahoo.com
I look forward to hearing from you & if you made the decision to move here.....you really wouldn't regret it.....you only live once, might as well be near the beach!!! East coast beaches are beautiful:)
Take care & talk to you later.........Lynn

Hi Julie! Congratulations on your move to Wilmington. You'll love it here!

I am a mom of two, a 3 year old and 8 month old and have lots of friends that work at PPD. I think you'll have an easy time getting to know the moms who work there and make quick friends. My three old takes dance at A Leap Above and really loves it. They do tap, ballet and tumble. She goes to preschool at Wilmington Christian and we are having a wonderful experience there too. Her pediatrician is Dean Meisel and he is on the northern side of town. All great things to say about him!

We have a rental open on our street I think and we live in the northern area of New Hanover County. The tenants moved out about 2 weeks ago. Out street has lots of friendly moms with great kids and we often gather together for play dates in various front yards. If you are interested I could check into that house and let you know.

If you haven't found a property management company to work with, I would recommend Century 21 Sweyer Rentals. You can reach the rental division at 910-256-0021. I work as a sales agent with C21 and I have heard many great things about our rental department. If you are interested in looking for a house to purchase, I can help you with that when you are ready.

Good luck with your move! You'll love Wilmington! (It isn't as cold here)

If you are in need of a support group when you get here, please check out First Baptist Church Mothers of Preschoolers. A great way to meet moms with children your daughter's age. We have meetings 2-3 times a month, we have monthly play dates and monthly mom's night out! When I moved to Wilmington 2 yrs ago these women welcomed me with open arms and I have formed some great friendships through this group.
The group meets at 411 Market Street, downtown Wilmington on the 1st, 3rd and 5th TH of each month from 9:30am - 12pm. It is a mom's play date with childcare!

There is a fan page on facebook ..... FBC Mothers of Preschoolers
